REFLUX/REGURGITATION

What is reflux/regurgitation?

Reflux/regurgitation are medical terms for spitting up. Reflux is very common in infants and can affect up to 50% of young babies. In the majority of thee cases is not serious and most babies grow out of it during the first year. Like my second baby Hannah. She was starting from she's 3 weeks until to 5 weeks. We're very worried and always refer to doctor and nurse. Also we're search in a internet and refer to many resources. Alhamdulillah everything back to normal. Actually nothing should be worried. As long as your child is thriving and gaining weight, then there is usually nothing to worry about, although it can be a nuisance and creates a lot of additional washing!

However, do consult a doctor if the regurgitation is excessive and persistent.

Practical tips for managing reflux
If your child suffers from reflux, the following tips may help :

  • Ensure a comfortable atmosphere at feeding time to help your baby to relax

  • Avoid large feed volumes; sometimes smaller and more frequent feeds might be better tolerated

  • Discourage your child from drinking too quickly or gulping the feed

  • Avoid lying your child flat, seating your child upright or 'jiggling' your child immediately after a feed

  • Avoid acidic drinks, such as fresh orange juice, as they might stimulate reflux

  • Avoid tight fitting clothes, which can press on your child's tummy

  • What can help?

  • A thickened feed is less likely to be brought back and will stay in your child's stomach.

  • Special rice starch can be used as a thickener in feeds because it only thickens once inside your child's stomach.

  • Rice congee is a recommended first weaning food for young children and so is natural choice for an effective solution for infant reflux.

  • Nevertheless, do seek the advise of your doctor on this matter.

  • Breastfeeding. Don't stop.
